Team Ireland will return from the first phase of the Four Nations tournament will return with 33 medals, a third of them gold – including a first international gold since Paris for two time Olympic Champion, Kellie Harrington.
This is the first time all four federations – Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales – have contested together in almost 2 decades. Tonight, golds are coming home to Cork, Dublin, Meath, Tipperary, Waterford, Westmeath, Wexford and Wicklow following a thrilling day of finals at the Ravenscraig Regional Sport Facility.
Team Ireland is the largest ever fielded by Boxing Ireland, and numbers 85 boxers from 70 clubs in 25 counties across Elite, U19, U17 and U15 age categories. Team Ireland’s U15 and U17 teams (attached) have arrived in Glasgow this evening. Their competitions get underway on Saturday morning.
Boxing Ireland President, Anto Donnelly, is Head of Delegation, while the Overall Team Manager is Anna Moore, of St. Francis BC, Limerick.
Anto Donnelly said “This has been an outstanding opening phase of the Four Nations tournament for Team Ireland. To win 33 medals, including 11 golds, is a tremendous achievement and a testament to the commitment of our boxers, coaches and clubs across the country. It is wonderful to see Kellie Harrington return to the top of the podium with her first international gold since Paris, while so many of our emerging athletes have also delivered impressive performances.”
Anto adds “With all four federations competing together for the first time in almost twenty years, these results carry added significance. We are proud to have fielded the largest team in Boxing Ireland’s history and wish our U15 and U17 teams every success as their competition gets underway in Glasgow.”
