CWG | Not to be for Rooney.

Not to be for Team NI’s Louis Rooney at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

He contested his 55kg Last 32 bout against Lesotho’s Mathealira Seholoholo. Louis, the reigning Ulster Elite champ and multiple European U23 medalist, won the first round 3-2, on a scoreline of 9-10, 9-10, 9-10, 10-9, 10-9.

The KO happened the second round of the contest. This is Louis’ first multi-games tournament, and the experience will stand to him.

Boxing is Team NI’s most successful sport, having won 61 CWG medals, of which 13 are gold. Team NI topped the medal table in the ring four years ago in Birmingham with 5 golds and silver and a bronze.

The team was announced in May and since then, has been in training at the Ulster High Performance Unit, supported by Sport NI, and Sport NI sport science medicine practitioners. There preparations have included a 10 week bloc of training, contesting the Eindhoven Box Cup, the 34th Ahmet Comert Bosporus International in Turkey and against a Scotland select.

Preparation culminated in the largest sparring camp ever held on the island of Ireland – a 16 nation camp in Belfast from July 6th to 16th, including Team NI Boxing; Team Ireland; Australia; Canada; Fiji; France; Ghana; GB; India; Mauritius, Nigeria, New Zealand; Scotland; Soloman Islands, Switzerland; Tonga; Tuvalu; Zambia. In all, over 200 boxers, coaches and support staff participated in the camp, which included 300 spars and 7 school combat sessions.

Day Three

There’s no Team NI interest on Day Two of the competition, Saturday – but here are two boxers between the ropes on Sunday.

Antrim BC’s Nicole Clyde (54kg) takes on Ghana’s Nancy Bamfo at around 6pm on Sunday evening.

On the same evening, at approximately 8:30pm, 65kg JP Hale of Star BC is in Last 16 action against the winner of the meeting between England and Ghana.
