Fighting for more than medals – Boxing Ireland has partnered with Cuan Mhuire in Galway to deliver a pivotal Start Box programme.
Cuan Mhuire is Ireland’s largest voluntary provider of Addiction Treatment Services and Residential Rehabilitation. Its main objective is the rehabilitation of people suffering from alcohol, drug and gambling addictions. Programmes enable participants to become aware of, and learn to deal with the underlying problems relating to these addictions, and discover their uniqueness, giftedness and their real purpose in life.
Boxing Ireland’s Gabe Cronnelly of Monivea BC partnered with Cuan Mhuire Centre Leader Martin Gavin to deliver the course. Martin was a key member of the former Four Corners BC in Roscommon.
Over a period of 6 weeks, 20 men and women took part in an on-site StartBox programme, using boxing as another tool to support recovery, and to re-build confidence, gain boxing skills and develop life-skills.
The programme also supported creating a sustainable pathway into clubs through recreational boxing.
Boxing Ireland’s vision is to make StartBox an ongoing programme in Cuan Mhuire centres and expand it to rehabilitation and addiction treatment centres across every province, giving more people the opportunity to rebuild their lives through boxing.
