Euro U17s | Four through to Quarter Finals

Four Team Ireland boxers have won through to the quarter final stage, and another to Last 16, on the second day of European U17 Championship boxing in Budva.

Macie Duffy O’Connor has won through to the quarter finals. She was the 5-0 winner over Aydan Ismayilli of Azerbaijan in the Last 16 48kg contest, scored 30:27; 30:27; 30:27; 30:27; 30:27. Macie boxes for a medal on Wednesday, against the winner of the contest between Georgia and Scotland.

Saoirse Donnelly is in to the 54kg medal stages, with a unanimous decision win over Croatia’s Ema Halajko, scored 30:27; 29:28; 30:27; 29:28; 29:28. Saoirse boxes for a medal in Wednesday’s Afternoon Session, against the winner of today’s bout between Italy and Spain.

63kg Maicey Field has clamed a QF berth, following a dominant, confident performance against Croatia’s Mia Aleksa, in which she forced standing counts in rounds 2 and 3, winning by RSC3. Maicey will box for a medal against Turkey’s Sudenur Yalgettekin in Wednesday’s Afternoon Session.

Daisy Kieran left it all in the ring in the hunt for a quarter final spot. The Team Co-Captain contested against Russia’s Agata Dedova, and lost the first round on all cards. She battled back in rounds 2 and 3, and claimed a 4-0 win. Judges scored the bout 29:27; 29:27; 29:27; 28:28; 29:27, reflecting a point deduction for holding for Dedova. Daisy’s back in action in Thursday’s Evening Session, boxing for a medal against the winner of the tonight’s contest between Italy and Latvia.

Pat Stokes has opened his campaign with a bang. He dominated Scotland’s Charlie Bonnar througout their 50kg Last 16 contest, and came away with the unanimous decision win. Judges scored the bout 27:30; 27:30; 27:30; 27:30; 24:30. Pat will take on Czechia’s Vojtech Halinar for a place in the Quarter Finals in Tuesday’s Afternoon Session.

A valiant performance by Lucie Prentice in Budva, but not to be on this occasion. Lucie, of Banbridge BC, contested her 50kg Last 16 contest against England’s Lilly Green, which ended in an RSC2 in favour of the English boxer. Lucie, a 2025 bronze medalist, can be proud of her European journey, which has included High Peformance training bloc, and a preparatory camp in Galway.

A record-breaking 473 boxers are contesting the championships, of whom 158 are women and 315 are men. Team Ireland is led and managed by Shirley Kenney of Curadh BC, and Gabe Cronnelly of Monivea. The team is coached by Ken Moore, St. Francis BC, Limerick; Damien Flood, Cabra BC, Dublin; Linda Morgan, Arklow BC, Wicklow and Gus Farrell, Monivea BC, Galway. Malachy Scott, Glengormley BC, Antrim, has been appointed R&J.

Competition Schedule

Boxing begins on October 3rd, and there is no rest day at this tournament. All finals and medal ceremonies will take place on October 10th. All Afternoon Sessions begin at 1pm, Irish time, and Evening Sessions start at 5pm.

Day Three

Boxing continues in Budva this evening, and Monday’s schedule is not yet available – however, 6 Team Ireland boxers are preparing for their first Championship bouts.

In the Afternoon Session, Maisie Flanagan boxes her 52kg Last 16 contest against England’s Delilah Lambert. Martin Nevin takes on Ukraine’s Danylo Sielieznov in another 52kg Last 16 bout. At 57kg, Martin Donovan opens his tournament in this session, taking on Bulgaria’s Stoyan Hristoskov in a Last 32 bout.

In the Evening Session, Robin O’Reilly contests for a place in the 66kg quarter finals against Sama Abbavoa of Azerbaijan. Rylee Finn, boxing at 48kg, is also in action in this session, contesting a Last 32 bout againt Latvia’s Deniss Haschenko. John Delaney makes his tournament debut against Dominik Sira of Slovakia in a 63kg Last 32 bout.
