After a 20 year hiatus, boxing returns to Innishmore this August.
Boxing Ireland & Galway Sports Partnership are partnering to return non-contact boxing to the people of the island by proving boxing taster sessions available for children, teenagers & adults as part of Boxing Ireland’s StartBox programme in the form of a Try It! Day
StartBox is a no-contact fundamentals of boxing programme for all ages 8+. Participants will learn boxing, stance, guard, footwork, basic punches, pad work, boxing skills drills and games in a structured, fun and safe environment.
Training will be led as Gaeilge by Connemara BC Coach, and native Irish speaker, Michael O Domhnaill. The ultimate, long term goald of this innovative project is to reconnect the Islands with mainland boxing and create a long-term boxing pathway to Connemara BC.
Boxing Ireland Connacht Club Support and Participation Manager Maeve Clarke says “This is a really special StartBox programme, and it’s a real privilege, with Michael and Richard’s help, to bring boxing back to Innishmore after a 20-year gap. We’re giving young people the chance to experience boxing in a safe, welcoming environment. We hope to inspire a new generation, build confidence and fitness, and show the many positive benefits boxing can bring. Most importantly, we hope this is the start of something lasting, with boxing once again becoming part of life on Innishmore.”
