Preparatory work to revive the Home of Irish Boxing is about to begin.
Boxing Ireland’s Board of Directors has agreed the investment of €19,000 in the development of a feasibility study, design concept and masterplan for the up-grade of the National Stadium. The building was last refurbished in 2000, which included the building of the current front entrance and some internal modifications.
Now, the Board of Directors intends that an analysis of the best internal layout of the building be conducted, to accommodate Boxing Ireland’s growing needs. The primary goals in this project are to create an internal layout which can accommodate two rings in the main auditorium, modern medical facilities, a dedicated warm-up area and changing rooms. The intention is that these modifications can take place while ensuring the Stadium remains a premier concert venue, raising revenue to fund out sport.
Boxing Ireland President, and member of the Board of Directors, Anto Donnelly, says “The National Stadium is the Home of Irish Boxing, and we have a responsibility to ensure that it is fit for the next generation of boxers, coaches and officials.
This is an important first step in developing a clear vision for the future of the Stadium. We want to create a facility that meets the needs of a modern and growing sport, while respecting the history and unique character of this iconic venue.
This feasibility study will allow us to properly understand what is possible and develop a masterplan that can guide the Stadium’s future for many years to come. We are investing not just in a building, but in the future of Irish boxing.”
