Boxing Ireland is delighted to welcome Liam Cunningham to his role as High Performance Coach.
This role contributes to to the planning, delivery, monitoring, and evaluation of training and competition programmes within the Boxing Ireland High Performance Unit. The role supports the achievement of international performance objectives by preparing male and female boxers to compete successfully at major championships while contributing to the implementation of the Boxing Ireland High Performance Strategy.
Liam was a competitive boxer with Saints ABC, a Commonwealth Games silver medalist, a senior champion and boxed for Ireland in Internationals and Four Nations. He has coached within his club, in support of the Ulster High Performance Programme, and at underage High Performance level including at the 2025 European U19 Championships, the 2025 European U17 Championships and the 2025 World of Havoc tournament.
Liam says “ This is appointment is a proud moment for me, having begun my coaching career at club level and effectively progressing through the coaching pathway from regional supporting the Ulster programme, to underage High Performance and now to Elite High Performance. I’m very much looking forward to working with immensely talented group of athletes and coaches, and continuing our trajectory of development, performance and achievement at international level.”

Not only does he have extensive club coaching experience across many years, Liam has been a highly effective coach at underage High Performance level, preparing and travelling with teams at benchmark World and European championships as well as contributing to the Ulster programme. He brings with him a wealth of experience from the coach and athlete perspective which will positively impact the development of our Elite international boxers”
Jon adds “Liam’s appointment, and that of John Paul Delaney in recent weeks, shows the efficacy of the coaching pathway. Both men began their coaching careers in their clubs, and honed their skills there, at regional and underage High Performance level before becoming Elite High Performance coaches. Their appointments are a testament to the opportunities that exist within our coaching structure and highlight the value of investing in coach development at every level of the sport”
